This study examines how rural tourism has influenced the development of Barra do Piraí. The motivating factor of this work is research on the role of rural tourism in the development of Barra do Piraí, a municipality located in the South Fluminense of Rio de Janeiro, in the tourist region known as Vale do Café. The great tourism potential of the region is characterized through historical and educational tourism, and other activities in rural areas. This worked adopted field research as the methodology (semi-structured interviews and questionnaires), as well as documentary and bibliographic research. Data from interviews and questionnaires were analyzed, through categories of analysis such as: the labor market, degree of domestic production, connectivity between agents listed in the tourist sector, the relationship between the public and the private sector, tourism as a source of income for tourism establishments, and the influence of tourism in Barra do Piraí. In this context, it is observed that despite the potential of the municipality of Barra do Piraí, with its farms and other historical buildings, hotels farms, and other types of tourism developments, these have not had an effective influence on the development of the locale.
