This article proposes a debate on the pre-colonial archaeological remains in the town of Garopaba (SC), and the possibilities of their use to promote sustainable development through archeological tourism. Based on a theoretical discussion of the political, ideological and economic processes of patrimonial protection, and the understanding of the dimensions of sustainable development presented by Sachs, the cultural heritage (and, by extension, the archaeological heritage) is seen as a key component for a development perspective that is not teleological and economist. It is in this sense that the proposal of archaeological tourism is presented, as having the potential to create alternative employment and income, while protecting and preserving the region’s archaeological sites.
